Varsity Cross Country · Cross Country Excels at Mt. SAC

By Bianca Rivas (Because Coach Perez was too busy to get this done on time)

Walnut, CA- This year Norte Vista Cross Country competed in the 72nd annual Mt. Sac Invitational. This invitational is known for its challenging course and most notable all the hills that are included. The first hill is called the Switchbacks due to the winding path they create. After that, there’s Poop Out Hill which is the steepest one athletes must get over. Lastly we have Reservoir Hill, one of the longest hills on the course not too far away from the finish line. After this hill, the course is mostly downhill with a flat straight away right to the finish line. Although it was a bit hot, there was a slight breeze that made the climate feel a little bit cooler.

Our first race of the day was for the Junior Varsity girls where despite the heat, Haydee Jaramillo(12) and Dulce Aguilera(12) both ran well and were able to finish their race in an invitational where it was a possibility to get cut off from the course if your pace wasn’t at a certain time. Next we had the Junior Varsity boys go off where Raul Chavez(11) finished first for our team and Javier Ruiz(11) finished strong only a few seconds behind. After Ruiz came Adrian Marquez(11) and Mathew Merino-Espinoza(11). Most of our boys finished within a minute of each other, making an excellent overall team race.

The Sophomore races were next starting with the ladies. We had Makayla Koshmerl, Amelia Mercado, and Sophia Hernandez all finish in the top 15 and were recognized by receiving a medal. Angelica Casas Murillo and Daniela Rocha made up the 4th and 5th scoring for our ladies which gave us 3rd place overall in this race. All of our ladies worked the hills and worked hard for their spot which earned them a plaque for 3rd place. In the Boys Sophomore Race Jonathan Martinez was able to push through and place 30th overall. Next was Carson Menter just under the 20 minute mark, followed by Anthony Torres-Martinez. Kris Menter finished 4th for Norte Vista with Giovanni Duran and Isaac Zuniga coming in 5th and 6th for Norte Vista and all having very strong finishes. Sophomore boys placed 12th overall.

In the girls Freshman race Citlaly Ruiz came in first for Norte Vista with a time of 22:00 having an incredible performance attacking the hills. Next came Emily Cardenas at 22:51 and at 27th runner overall was Violette Valencia and in the 5th spot was Nataly Joya. Mark Landa had an amazing performance in this race with a time of 19:23. In second place from our team was Emmanuel Reyes followed by Juan Mendoza and  Alex Nieto. Angel Avilez and Saul Castellanos finished their race strong.

The boys Varsity race proved to be successful as three of our boys were in the top 10 in the race. Mario Arce(12) followed by Ernesto Ruiz(10) and Ivan Vargas(12) worked together in a pack to move up during the first mile of the race. Eric Olivo(11) came in just before the 18:00 minute mark with Osiel Mendoza(12) and Julian Osnaya(11) working together and coming in at the same time. On the ladies side we had Bianca Rivas(12) with Lissett Nieto (12) close behind, Johari Jauregui (11),  Anhie Rios (11), and Julia Ramirez (11) all ran excellent races, working together as a team coming in one after another of each other.

Our next race is League finals at Citrus Heritage Park where Varsity Boys will compete for League Champions. They are currently tied with two other teams from our League. Varsity girls are in first place as well as JV boys and JV girls
