Varsity Cross Country · Cross Country Attacks the Hills in RVL 2

River Valley League 2-On October 16th the Norte Vista cross country team competed in our second league meet on our home course. The hills known as Rancho La Sierra are some of the hardest hills in all the courses of the River Valley League. At the halfway point we have Rozel’s hill that is roughly 200 meters of uphill that can make or break a race.

Our JV girls were the first race with Johari Jauregui (11) leading our girls and also winning the race overall. She attacked the hills with great execution. She was followed by Annhie Rios (11), Julia Ramirez (11), and Viollete Valencia (9). All of the girls coming in one after another. The girls took a commanding lead at the mile marker and worked as a unit going up the hills. Viollete managed to work all the way up rozels without stopping. Giselle Navarro (11), Sofia Hernandez (10), and Eliza Mendoza (10) all came in the top 10 helping us win with a score of 16 points.

Our JV boys were next with Giovanni Velasquez (12) taking the lead early on and leading the race at the end. Carson Menter (10) and Julian Osnaya (11) came in right after to give us a commanding lead. Mark Landa (9) and Emmanuel Reyes (9) finished the scoring team helping us win with a score of 17. Many of the JV boys had their first attempt at this course and did extremely well at attacking the course. This kind of depth in the JV races show a strong future for the team.

The varsity girls were next with the team of Ashley Magana (9), Makayla Koshmerl (9), Emily Cardenas (9), Amelia Mercado (10), Citlaly Ruiz (9), Lissett Nieto (12), and Bianca Rivas (12). The girls held strong throughout the hills. Many have been battling injuries and were worried about the hills, but attacked them with no fear. Ashley, Makayla, and Emily started the race together and managed to work together all the way through the race. They finished 1,2, and 3 in the race. Amelia and Citlaly finished off the scoring team while being in the top 7 and had a final score of 19 points over Patriot coming in second with 58 points.

The varsity boys had the team of Mario Arce (12), Ivan Vargas (12) Ernesto Ruiz (10), Jonathan Martinez (10), Eric Olivo (11), Gabriel Mendez (10), and Anthony Torres-Martinez (10). Ernesto had the lead at the halfway point, but unfortunately he was experiencing hip pain and had to drop back. Fortunately, Mario and Ivan being their consistent selves saw that they needed to make up for the lost points. They 3 of them came in together in places 3, 4, and 5, which still gave us some solid points. Jonathan, Eric and Gabriel came in 15, 16, and 17 giving us a score of 43 with out 6th runner placing 17th. When the scores were calculated the former leader Patriot came in 3rd, but La Sierra and Norte Vista both finished with 43 pts. La Sierras 6th runner came in at 13th place giving the tie breaker to La Sierra. La Sierra came in 3rd in the previous race creating a 3 way tie for first place coming into league finals.

The boys and girls teams have done a lot of growing and we are excited to see how the final races of the season will fare for the whole team. We have Mt. Sac on October 26th and League Finals on November 6th. From then on our varsity teams may have the opportunity to run in the Southern Section prelims in Riverside.
