The Norte Vista Cross Country team went out to Hemet, CA this Saturday for the Janice Kelley Bulldog Invitational. This was our first time at this invite and our students were eager to check out the course and to run their first 5k of the season.
Our first race was girls frosh-soph with Makayla Koshmerl (10) who led the girls team with a second place finish in a time of 20:47. She did a superb job attacking the hills and leaving the girls on the downhill. Ashley Magana (9) and Emily Cardenas (9) worked together closing gaps and working hills together finishing in ninth and tenth. This was exactly what the coaches wanted to see from this young group of girls as we approach our first league race. Citlaly Ruiz (9) and Nataly Joya (9) rounded out the scoring that helped get the girls team a first place finish.
The frosh-soph boys took off with Ernesto Ruiz (10) who worked with the front pack before taking a commanding lead and finished in first. Jonathan Martinez (10) came second with another low 6 min pace performance. Peter Pineda (10) showed that he is getting his confidence with racing again and looking to keep improving finishing in the top 5 for our boys. Saul Castellanos (9) and Dexter Bocanegra (9) got their first taste of an invitational and held up just fine completing the race and getting off to a good start for racing.
Although the heat was starting to pick up, the junior/senior girls did just fine in their race attacking the course. Bianca Rivas (12) led the girls placing in the top 25 in a field of 128. Julia Ramirez (11) came second for our girls and managed to get a personal best for the 5k distance by a minute. Johari Jauregui (11) had a great performance coming in third for our girls. She is new to this sport, but showed a lot of courage passing several girls on the hill.
The last race of the day was the junior/senior boys. Mario Arce (12) and Ivan Vargas (12) led the pack by working together throughout the race. This duo showed a great amount of teamwork passing boys every mile. This teamwork will play in our favor come our first league meet. Ivan also had a distance PR by 44 seconds. Osiel Mendoza (12) had a great race moving up the entire time and felt that this course was not as difficult has he anticipated.
Nearly half of our runners today received medals today, which required being in the top 60. Those who received medals were Mario Arce, Ivan Vargas, Eric Olivo, Bianca Rivas, Julia Ramirez, Johari Jauregui, Lissett Nieto, Ernesto Ruiz, Jonathan Martinez, Gabriel Mendez, Makayla Koshmerl, Ashley Magana, Emily Cardenas, Citlaly Ruiz, Nataly Joya, and Violette Valencia.
